How to Count Words in an Essay (and Hit Your Word Count)
Updated June 2026
Count words, characters, sentences & reading time.
Most essays come with a word limit. Here's how to check your count fast โ and how to hit the target without obvious filler.
The fastest way
Paste your text into a live word counter (like the one below) and it tallies words, characters, sentences, and reading time as you type. No need to dig through a menu.
In Google Docs and Word
- Google Docs: Tools โ Word count, or press Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + C.
- Microsoft Word: the count shows in the status bar at the bottom, or Review โ Word Count.
The catch: those count your whole document, including the title, header, and works-cited page. A standalone counter lets you paste just the body.
Hitting the word count honestly
- Add evidence, not adjectives. A short quote or statistic adds words and substance.
- Explain your examples. Most under-length essays state a point but never unpack it.
- Address a counterargument. One extra paragraph that answers "but what aboutโฆ" is worth more than padding.
- Cut filler if you're over. "Due to the fact that" โ "because." "In order to" โ "to."
Does the word count include citations?
Usually the in-text citations count but the reference list doesn't. When in doubt, ask your instructor โ and count the body separately so you know both numbers.

Frequently asked questions
Is a word count the same as a character count?
No. Word count tallies words separated by spaces; character count tallies every letter, number, and symbol. Some platforms (like X) limit characters, not words.
How many pages is 1,000 words?
Roughly 4 pages double-spaced or 2 pages single-spaced in a standard 12pt font, though it varies by formatting.
