CDL school can cost $3,000โ$10,000, but many people pay little or nothing out of pocket. Here are the real ways to fund your commercial driver's license training.
1. Company-sponsored (paid) CDL training
This is the most common path. Many trucking companies pay for your CDL school โ sometimes running their own training โ in exchange for a commitment to drive for them (often 6โ18 months). Some pay you a small wage while you train.
- Pros: little or no upfront cost, and a job waiting at the end.
- Watch for: the contract. If you leave early, you may owe the tuition back. Read the repayment terms and the pay rate carefully before signing.
2. Workforce grants (WIOA)
The federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) can cover CDL training for eligible people through your local American Job Center. Truck driving is on many states' approved training lists. Search "American Job Center near me" and ask about WIOA funding for CDL.
3. Community college programs
Many community colleges offer CDL programs that are cheaper than private schools and may qualify for financial aid or state grants. Check schools near you and ask the financial-aid office what applies.
4. Veterans' benefits
If you served, the GI Bill can cover CDL training at approved schools, and some programs offer Military Skills Test Waivers if you drove heavy vehicles in service. Contact the VA or the school's veteran coordinator.
5. Other options
- Employer tuition assistance if you already work somewhere that hires drivers.
- State or local grants for in-demand jobs โ ask the job center.
- Payment plans directly with the school (compare the total cost and interest).
Before you commit
Get every promise โ tuition, wage, contract length, repayment โ in writing. A "free" program with a harsh repayment clause can cost more than paying up front. And study early: the written permit tests are free to practice, so start now.
